About hair transplantation
Hair transplantation is a procedure that involves the removal of hair follicles (grafts) on the head or body and transplanting them to the site of alopecia (baldness).

Indications and contradictions

❔ Where is donor hair taken from for a hair transplant?
Hair follicles are most commonly harvested from the back and sides of the head, where the hair is generally more resistant to hair loss. If there is insufficient donor hair on the scalp, grafts may, in certain cases, be taken from other areas of the body. The doctor determines the appropriate donor area and transplantation method during the consultation.

❔ Does transplanted hair fall out over time, or do the results last a lifetime?
During the first few weeks after the procedure, the transplanted hairs may temporarily shed. This is a normal stage, as the follicles themselves remain in the skin. New hair begins to grow after approximately 3–4 months, while noticeable results are usually assessed after 6–12 months. Transplanted follicles generally retain the resistance of the donor area, providing long-lasting results. However, hair may naturally become thinner with age, while the patient’s existing non-transplanted hair may continue to fall out.

❔ How should I care for my scalp during the first few days after a hair transplant?
During the first few days, it is important not to touch or scratch the transplanted area, remove any scabs, or apply pressure to it. Hair washing is usually allowed from the second day and should be done gently, without a strong stream of water or rubbing the scalp. Strenuous physical activity, saunas, swimming pools, and alcohol should also be temporarily avoided, and the head should be protected from the sun. The doctor will provide detailed, individualized aftercare instructions following the procedure.

❔ Does transplanted hair grow as successfully in women as it does in men?
Yes. When the indications are properly assessed, transplanted follicles can grow just as successfully in women as in men. However, hair transplantation is not suitable for all women: in cases of diffuse hair loss, the donor area may also be weakened. Therefore, before surgery, it is important to identify the cause of alopecia, assess the donor area, and rule out cases in which treatment by a trichologist would be more effective.
